Lost Aussie laptop shows up in NZ

When someone leaves a laptop on a park bench in Sydney they probably don't expect it to turn up in a small town in New Zealand.
But that's exactly what's happened to an Adelaide student whose missing computer reappeared in Rangiora, north of Christchurch.
The student's school, which had issued him with the laptop, contacted Microsoft, which was able to track the device's slow passage across the Tasman to a house in the South Island town.
Sergeant Colin Stewart told NZ Newswire when officers in Rangiora received a call about the device, they visited the house and quickly realised the family that lived there had just returned from a cruise to Sydney.
Their 13-year-old son had found the laptop while there and taken it back home with him.
The computer would be sent back to its owner this week, he said.
Because it was taken in Australia, it was unlikely any charges would be brought, but Sgt Stewart said people had an obligation to look for the owners of lost property before taking it and the best way to do this was to hand items to police.
"Whether it's in Australia or New Zealand, the right thing to do is to try to find the owner," he said.

HP introduces new devices and services in preparation for Windows 10

HP’s gearing up for the release of Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 10, with new offerings and security solutions. One of the new security features that’ll be available on HP’s Elite line and ZBooks is the Sure Start. It’s a self-healing BIOS-level protection to make sure your BIOS hasn’t been tampered with and it can reset it to its original state if it has been messed with. This’ll work hand-in-hand with Windows 10 Enterprise’s Device Guard to prevent any security threats.
Two of the new devices HP introduced include the HP EliteBook Folio 1020 and HP Pro Tablet 608. The EliteBook Folio 1020 is a Windows 10-powered laptop and features BANG & OLUFSEN audio. It’s said to be the thinnest, lightest and most secure business-class laptop. If you need a new business slate, the Pro Tablet 608 is designed to mix productivity and portability. Pricing and availability though for both devices haven’t been announced yet.

HP preps limited edition EliteBook Folio 1020 Windows 10 laptop with Bang & Olufsen

HP has tried to jazz up some of its consumer PCs in the past with third-party designer touches -- a long-time tactic the industry (including Apple) has leaned on to appeal to luxury or style-conscious buyers (remember Dell's Threadless laptops or Karim Rashid's take on the Asus Eee PC netbook). It's much rarer, however, that such flair is given to enterprise systems, which may have graduated from boring beige boxes, but generally remain buttoned-down.
So it comes as a bit of a surprise that HP has chosen its new EliteBook Folio 1020 to be one of the first to receive a limited edition makeover in association with Bang & Olufsen (which became HP's audio partner of choice after it dumped Beats in the wake of Apple's acquisition of that company). Granted, the EliteBook Folio 1020 is one of the company's most exciting laptop designs to come along in a long time (weighing around 2.7 pounds and a mere 0.62 inches thick), but it's positioned as a next-generation business notebook, albeit one that can compete with Apple's latest MacBook in the looks department.
The limited edition HP EliteBook Folio 1020 gets a bit of exterior bling in the form of copper accents and a darker gray (or "ash silver") chassis replacing the chrome-with-black look of the standard version. Not surprisingly given B&O's heritage, its audio technology has been built into the special configuration, which HP emphasizes will come in use with the 1020's dual-array microphones, speakers, and webcam. It's unclear whether they will be any kind of spec bump for this edition beyond the paint job and improved audio, neither of which may matter to many corporate clients.
HP has announced the EliteBook Folio 1020 limited edition as part of its communicationaround the forthcoming Windows 10 launch. It calls out two systems in particular -- the B&O version and the Pro Tablet 608 -- as newer models that will ship with the latest Windows OS pre-installed. While touting the new security features of Windows 10, HP adds its BIOSphere technology and fingeprint reader to many of its enterprise laptops, including the EliteBook Folio lineup.
HP hasn't announced a release date or pricing info for the EliteBook Folio 1020 limited edition, though there will most likely be a hike of some kind beyond the $1,249 price of the base configuration. The new model brings a fresh look and potentially better sound to an enterprise laptop that already impressed ZDNet's James Kendrick.

LG develops world’s thinnest touch panel for laptops

Everyone loves thin-and-light laptops these days, and part of the reason why they can be manufactured as such is due to the display. A thinner display means a thinner lid or device thickness.
South Korea’s LG is one of the world leaders in making all kinds of displays, and they have just announced this week the world’s thinnest full LCD touch screen for laptops, which combines LCD and touch sensors, and will be available later this year.
LG makes thinner and lighter screen
The company has made an in-cell touch full HD LCD panel using its so-called Advanced In-cell Touch (AIT) technology. They have previously used a kind of add touch screen tech that puts a touch panel on top of an LCD panel as an extra layer.
However, the in-cell type of display doesn’t need cover glass or additional bezel space, which means it can be made thinner and lighter, as well as improved brightness as it reflects less light.
The latest developments that LG has invented reduces the panel thickness by a millimetre (about 25%) and its weight by 200 grams (a 30% reduction) compared with current 15 to 16-inch touch panels with full HD resolution.
