Apple Finally Fixes The iPhone Keyboard’s Worst Flaw In iOS 9

It’s the little things in life.
Like, you know, being able to tell if your keyboard is currently set to use capital letters or not.
With iOS 9, Apple is finally fixing one of the platform’s strangest quirks: the keyboard will no longer appear to be all caps, all the time.

If you’re an Android user, or someone who just doesn’t think about stuff like this all that much, you might have no idea what I’m talking about.
You see, in all builds of iOS thus far, the keyboard always uses capital letters to represent each key — whether or not you’ve actually hit shift or have caps lock on.
That works well enough on physical keyboards — for the most part, you’re holding the shift key when you want shift turned on.
On a touchscreen keyboard, where you tap shift instead of hold, it’s not so simple. Sometimes you tap shift and forget, or tap it on accident. Sometimes the keyboard rolls into view with shift on by default.
To date, iOS has shown you’re in shift/caps lock by changing the color of the shift key from grey to white. The end result: a whole lot of “Wait. Crap. Shift is grey’d out. Does that mean shift is on, or that shift is off? The letters are big… so… Oh well, better tap a key to test it.”
No more!
iOS 9 is currently in beta, but it’s the first major iOS beta that is available for public (read: non-developer) consumption.

How To Get Apple's iOS 9 On Your iPhone Today

You don't have to wait until September to try Apple's new operating software complete with improved maps, notes and design tweaks

Apple's new iPhone and iPad operating system - iOS 9 - will not be officially released to the public until the autumn. But you can get your hands on it today.
The company has released its 'public beta' - the work-in-progress version of the software which will continue to be polished over the next couple of months.
iOS 9 features a host of new features, including a beefed-up Notes app which allows you to doodle with your finger, an improved in-built Maps app featuring public transport maps and nearby highlights, and a new smart assistant that suggests news articles, apps and activities.
iPad users get even more benefits, with side-by-side multitasking allowing them to carry out two tasks at once, video playback which sits in the corner of other apps, and a handy shortcut bar for other apps.

There are also a number of minor but noticeable cosmetic tweaks across both platforms, including a new font and more polished app logos.
A News aggregation app will also appear as standard in the launch edition of iOS 9 but currently does not appear in the UK test version.
Here's how to upgrade to iOS 9 for free:
:: Back-up your iPhone or iPad
This is really important. Beta versions of software can be temperamental with more bugs and glitches than you might be used to.

Many people who have tried iOS 9 say they are surprised by its stability, but it's still important to be aware of the temporary frustration and inconvenience beta software could cause you.
So make sure your photos, contacts and other important information are all backed up in case anything goes wrong.
:: Sign up for Apple's testing programme
Visit beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram and click the blue "sign up" button, which will ask for your Apple ID.
Be sure to use the same ID you use on the iOS device you will be installing the new software on.
:: Using your iPhone or iPad visit beta.apple.com
Use Safari to reach then page, then sign in. After that, scroll down to 'step two' on the iOS section and tap on the 'download profile' button.
You should be redirected to your device's Settings app, where you should have the option of tapping a button labelled 'install'.
You'll be asked to enter your device's pin, then to accept the terms and conditions.
:: Once installed, restart your device
Once it has restarted, launch the Settings app.
Tap on 'general' then 'software update'. At this point, iOS 9 should be waiting for you to install. Just press the 'update' button to get the process under way.
:: Once complete, your phone will restart with the new operating system installed.

iPhone 7: Force Touch to be built in to next Apple phone

The next iPhone will have technology that will let it know how hard its screen is being pressed, and turn it into one big button, according to reports.
Apple’s next phone – likely called the iPhone 6S or iPhone 7 – will have Force Touch technology, first launched in the Apple Watch, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The company is also considering new colours for the phone, alongside the current grey, silver and gold options.
The Force Touch technology will allow a new way of interacting with the phone, alongside the current swipes and taps. On the Apple Watch, it allows the screen to act like another button – with long presses bringing up extra options on the screen – andsome rumours have already suggested that will be used in the camera app.

The WSJ report chimes with previous rumours, which have suggested that either the next iPhone or its successor would have the technology built in. It also fits with Apple’s apparent strategy to put Force Touch into all of its devices – it was introduced in the Apple Watch, and has already been integrated into Apple’s MacBook.
The screen sizes will stay the same in the next iPhone, according to the WSJ. Apple currently makes a phablet-sized iPhone 6 Plus, the iPhone 6 and a smaller iPhone 5S – it’s unclear whether the latter form factor will be a part of the new line-up.
It isn’t expected that the next phone will include any significant new external design changes, meaning that it is likely to be called iPhone 6S. It is expected to be released in September
